I love summer road trips. Today my brother and I went on a road trip with a couple of friends. There is an annual classic car and hotrod festival in Kumeu. This is just two hours down the road from us so we jumped in the truck and went for a drive.
My brother had sold an engine and gearbox to a guy near the showgrounds and I had sold an engine head to a friend nearby. We loaded up his truck with car parts and got on the road at six-thirty in the morning.
We had the engine and gearbox on a trailer behind my brother’s old truck and the going was slow. This wasn’t too much of an issue coz the sun was out and we’d loaded up with road trip treats. We arrived at the engine drop-off destination and unhitched the trailer and headed to the show while we waited for the buyer to get home from work.
Life doesn’t suck…
because I love good summer road trips
On our way, we met up with friends on the side of the road and convoyed to the showgrounds. When we arrived the sun was beating down. We shared the sunblock around and then headed out into the paddocks of cars.
The Kumeu Classic Car and Hot Rod Festival is the biggest car show I’ve ever attended. This must be around the seventh time I’ve been. It’s a big day out and it’s almost always blisteringly hot.
We spent a good four hours taking it all in. There is a huge mix of cars catering to many different tastes. It’s amazing wandering around discovering new and different cars around each corner. Add to this the mix of showground food including hot chips, milkshakes and doughnuts and you have a fun day out.
Lunch was bakery food on the side of the main road with a constant stream of cars from the show going past. When we were done with lunch we made the short trip back to where we had dropped the trailer off.
We stopped in and chatted with engine buyer. He was a really interesting dude and told us about his businesses and vehicles. We yarned for a while before jumping back on the road and heading home.
It had been another successful summer road trip. I’m grateful that we can stop and take these trips and get away for the day. Jumping in the car and driving somewhere fun for the day. Roll on the next road trip.
