Gratitude, Day 6: I am grateful for my teachers

When I say that I’m grateful for my teachers I don’t just mean my school teachers. I mean all of those who have taught me things in life and those that continue to teach me.

My first teachers were my parents. Helping me learn to talk, how to walk, how to interact with the people and environment around me. Modeling human behaviours and helping mold me into the seemingly well adjusted human being that I am today. They have continued to help shape me and guide me through my life. Today we talked and discussed things, these simple interactions continue to further influence my life.

Life doesn’t suck…
because I have had many great teachers in life.

You can’t talk about teachers without mentioning school teachers. I’ve had a lot of these through my years of school. There are the amazing ones that I still look back fondly on, and there are the less amazing ones whose names I don’t even remember. All of these teachers at some point in time taught me one thing or another, even if it was how not to treat other people. I am grateful for all that these teachers have given me and their teachings are little building blocks that contribute to who I am.

Today I have had a negative interaction with someone working in retail. I witnessed them treating people I care about in a way that I don’t think they deserved to be treated. I saw them taking advantage of these people and their understanding of the product. This interaction lead me to find a solution that wasn’t coming from talking to them. This taught me things about myself, showing me where I need to grow, showing me positives and negatives in how I handled the situation. Conversation with the person I care about later on showed me their perspective of the situation and how they felt about it. We both had different feelings triggered by different circumstances. The conversation showed me that everyone has a different take on what is happening and this is shaped by our experiences.

My life has been full of experiences, teachers, teachings and learnings. Each of these teachings another little Lego block that makes up who I am, how I behave, how I respond. I am grateful for these experiences and teachers and everything they have taught me. They make me who I am and I am proud to be me.
