I’ve been learning to cook. I’m diversifying what I cook and learning techniques and developing my cooking.
I’ve never been big into cooking. I could feed myself, but I didn’t cook anything amazing or adventurous. Then I got a bit more interested. I found out what different things did in a dish. Learning what spices and herbs and seasonings to use. This lead to me exploring YouTube for different meals.
Life doesn’t suck…
because I am learning to cook
I watched some Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsey. Then I found Sam The Cooking Guy. Sam’s recipes were up my ally. Mexican is probably my favourite international cuisine. I can’t even remember what I was searching for, but I found his videos and then couldn’t stop watching.
His cooking is achievable. He uses ingredients that are accessible and techniques that you can do at home. His cooking has inspired a bunch of things I’ve cooked and has lead me to explore spices, ingredients and kitchen utensils I’d never thought of.
I was really lucky to receive a voucher for a home-wares store in town after doing a talk at a local business course. This coincided really well with my experiments with cooking. I’d worked out what I had and what I wanted. I knew that a good sharp knife would make cooking much easier, but I’d never used it.
The lady in the store was super helpful and pointed me in the direction of a knife block with three different knives. When I got it home and I cut everything. I cut tomato, I cut onion, I cut cucumber. It was amazing how the knife just fell through the things I was cutting. This was life changing.
Preparing food was now fun. I wanted to cook even more. I had the right tools for the job and it made things much easier. I’ve really started to love cooking now and am exploring even more. I’m really grateful that I’m learning to cook and I find it nice and relaxing. Cooking is going to be something that I keep working on for a long time yet.
