Gratitude, Day 42: I am grateful for having a roof over my head

I’ve never had to worry about having a roof over my head. Unlike some people, I don’t have to worry about somewhere warm and safe to live.

Life doesn’t suck…
because I have a roof over my head

Growing up my parents always owned their own home. I never lived in a rental until I lived with an ex. I came home from the hospital to a warm, dry, safe house.

I spent the first ten or so years of my life there. Mum and Dad renovated that house and eventually sold it to buy a lifestyle block. There they built an amazing rammed earth home that we lived in till after I had finished high school.

When I was in my early twenties Mum and Dad planned to move to Australia. They put the lifestyle block on the market and bought a smaller, cheaper property in town. The plan was to store stuff at this house and rent it out. There was the potential for this house to be somewhere my brother and I could rent off our parents.

This plan didn’t eventuate and Mum and Dad are still living there ten years later. Both my brother and I have lived there at different times during our twenties with our parents when our circumstances have required it.

Now I live with my partner on their family land. Both our families have offered to help us into a house. Not everyone is this fortunate and I never take it for granted. I’m grateful to know that both our families care about us enough to be prepared to help keep us housed. We’re very lucky to be moving into a house shortly, which couldn’t have happened without family help.

I am super grateful to be in these circumstances and to always have had a roof over my head.
