Privilege noun a special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group.
The part of the dictionary definition of privilege that I am focusing on here is “advantage granted to a particular person”.
Life doesn’t suck…
because I am lucky to have my privilege
I am fortunate to have been born into a great family. This has made much of my life easier than the lives of others. We may not have had huge amounts of money growing up, but we were never short of anything we needed. My parents are still together, which makes me a minority among my friends. They provide huge support for me.
When I went to school I was well fed, I had a good lunch packed for me. This set me up well to take in everything that was put in front of me and I did really well at school. I was able to live at home for free while I studied. My education was a huge advantage to me and has set me up well to work in the career of my choice rather than having to take any work available just to survive. I’m very fortunate to have had these circumstances which have made this process smooth for me.
I feel it would be an insult to those experiencing daily discrimination due to the colour of their skin, their sexuality, their gender or their religion and those living in third-world or war-torn countries if I didn’t acknowledge the advantages I have in life just from being born when, where and who I was. I am hugely grateful for my privilege.
Without my privilege, I would have had to work much harder to get to where I am and may not even have got here. I am eternally grateful for these advantages.
This video does a great job of illustrating privilege and all the advantages I am grateful for.
