Gratitude, Day 17: I am grateful for having a backup plan.

I’m grateful for my backup plan. Today my computer decided that it didn’t want to come to work. It’s something that I dread. I work on my computer all day everyday. Today it wasn’t going to progress past the boot screen.

Life doesn’t suck…
because I have a backup plan.

When your whole business revolves around your computer you need it to be reliable. My computer has been reliable for a long time. When it wouldn’t start this morning I was annoyed, but I knew that it wasn’t catastrophic. I have a backup.

Technically I have multiple backups. I have two spare computers at work, they run Windows, which isn’t my favourite option, but today it was better than not having an option. I love my MacBook. It’s my most important tool. It’s intuitive to use, I know all the keyboard shortcuts. My muscle memory remembers the keyboard even if I don’t touch type properly.

I’m very fortunate to be on a position to have collected these spare computers that I can turn to when I need them. For example, today when my computer wouldn’t start for the first time in three years I just switched over to my spare computer, I didn’t lose any time, I just jumped on and continued what I was doing.

My second kind of backup is a file backup. My MacBook backs up automatically to an external hard drive using Time Machine. This means that as I use my computer it keeps everything backed up automatically. Last time I had to restore from a backup was three years ago when I got my new computer. I loaded a time machine backup and my brand new computer looked exactly like my old computer in less that thirty minutes.

I’m really grateful to have a backup plan. I’m lucky to be in a position to have spare devices. In fact tonight I’m writing this on an iPad rather than my usual MacBook. Not all people are this fortunate. I’m very grateful that I am.
