Gratitude, Day 15: I am grateful that I have enough

I have enough. This is something we don’t often say. We always talk about what we want.

Life doesn’t suck…
because I have enough.

We spend our lives wanting more. All the time thinking about what we want. It’s good to stop and think “hey, I have what I need, I have enough.” I have a job, a family, friends, a car that gets me places.

Marketing makes us want more. They show us shiny new cars and tell us how much better they are than the ones we currently have. We get shown bodies in the media like they are what we should look like. Houses get bigger and bigger as we try to have more than what we already have and more than what the Jones family down the road has.

Us being happy with what we have is a worst-case scenario for retailers and marketers. How can they sell us the new Hyundai SUV if we are happy with our 1997 Toyota Corolla? It’s their job to make us want more than what we have and they do this by appealing to our emotions. They show us happy families with brand new cars and big new houses. This makes us want that happiness for ourselves.

If we take the time to look at what we have, we can see that we have what we need and be grateful for it. Yes, I could have a better, more expensive car, but my car gets me where it needs to, it’s safe and I enjoy driving it. I could have a job that earns me a lot more money and requires much less hard work, but my job gives me control over my hours and lets me control my potential earnings.

Today, I am grateful for what I have because I have enough. I have much more than some people and anything extra is a bonus, not a need.
