Gratitude, Day 34: I am grateful for having the right tool for the job.

Having the right tool for the job makes our lives much easier. Today while gardening the tool in question was a nineteen-tonne digger and the gardening involved plucking trees out of the ground like they were weeds.

Life doesn’t suck…
because I have the right tool for the job.

We’ve been tidying up the farm’s cottage and I’ve been doing some work in the garden. There were a bunch of trees we didn’t want and my fiancee’s step-father said he could pull them out with his digger.

I’d never paid much attention to the digger but knew it was big and it was old. After some big, old digger maintenance the digger came clacking down the drive and across the paddock. My future step-father-in-law had the smile of a kid who’d been given his favourite toy.

Some research tonight told me that it’s a Caterpillar 215B from around 1985 and weighs around nineteen tonnes. Turns out that it’s a decently sized digger.

We wrapped a chain around the first tree and lifted it out of the ground like you’d pluck a weed from the garden. In addition, we plucked another five trees, a bunch of fence posts and the remains of the washing line. In the space of an hour, we’d managed to do what probably would have taken us a whole weekend without the digger.

I loaded everything onto the trailer behind the farm truck. Wehn I got the trailer to the dump site I used it’s giant hydraulic ram to tip everything off it. As a result, unloading was easy as pie and took me less time than it took to drive to where we were dumping the trees.

I’m super grateful to have had these tools available to me, they made the whole process much easier. It’s great having the right tool for the job.
